Joint Pain

Your knees and shoulders are most likely to cause joint pain, but every joint is susceptible to soft tissue injuries and inflammatory conditions. At Revive Spine and Pain Center in Marlton, Hamilton Township, East Brunswick, and Northfield, New Jersey, Michael Rizkalla, MD, Mahmud Ibrahim, MD, and the team use advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound to diagnose joint problems and create integrative treatment plans that include regenerative therapy, physical therapy, and interventional procedures. What causes joint pain?

Joint pain, called arthralgia, often begins inside the joint. If the pain is accompanied by joint inflammation, you have arthritis. You can also develop joint pain when the tendons, ligaments, and muscles supporting the joint are damaged.

The most common causes of joint pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Post-traumatic arthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Injuries (sprains, strains, and fractures)
  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Tennis elbow

Without treatment, these conditions get progressively worse, often needing joint replacement. You can prevent or delay surgery with regenerative treatments.

How do specialists diagnose joint pain?

Revive Spine and Pain Center performs diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound in the office. Ultrasound is noninvasive and doesn’t expose you to ionizing radiation. It reveals inflammation and soft tissue injuries that aren’t visible on other types of diagnostic imaging.

Your provider also uses musculoskeletal ultrasound when performing joint injections. Ultrasound produces images in real-time, allowing them to see the needle as it moves toward the targeted tissues.

Why does joint pain often affect knees and shoulders?

Your knees support your body weight while constantly moving, a combination that makes them susceptible to tissue damage and osteoarthritis.

In your shoulder, a group of four muscles called the rotator cuff hold your arm in the shoulder socket and stabilize the joint. These muscles are easily injured as they endure your arm’s daily, repetitive movements.

Your Revive Spine and Pain Center provider actively studies the effectiveness of regenerative therapy for rotator cuff injuries and joint pain due to arthritis in the knees (as well as the hips and ankles).

How is joint pain treated?

Joint pain responds well to a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates regenerative therapy, interventional medicine, and physical therapy.

These are a few examples of the regenerative treatments you may receive:

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) injections
  • Prolotherapy

These therapies accelerate the healing response and regenerate new cells to repair damaged tissues and rebuild new tissues. Regenerative treatments are especially beneficial for joint pain because they trigger the production of collagen, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage.

You may also receive a trigger point injection or interventional treatments such as steroid injections and radiofrequency ablation.
